out of character

I recently read and finished  J. R. R. Tolkens book The Hobbit and began to realize that the character Bilbo is out of his character. he comes from a long family that frowns upon adventures or even leaving their hometown. So one of his friends Gandalf asks him to go on a quest to "the Lonely Mountian" to get treasure. He immediately says no  because of his reputation of being rich and never leaving his town. But after he hears of these adventures he longs to go. He then decides that he is more important than his reputation and decides to go. By going out of his character he is later rewarded with gold to spend when he returns; but also he has to fight to get back his  stuff that was in his house. So his choice that was out of character later led to great riches but also a little loss of furniture.
